On hobbies, holidays and gardening leave: a Cup Day reflection by an amateur food grower
Looking for a new hobby?
In this deeply heartfelt reflection I argue the case for backyard food growing as being something that is wonderfully good for both people and planet: it’s a pastime that we need now more than ever! 🌱🍅🥗🌏
Our Future Work: a Labour Day reflection
Back on New Year’s Day, a member of the Parents For Climate online community posed this question:
“If you would support a child's wish to work in a field that actually successfully has a meaningful impact on reducing emissions (and that isn't depressing because of lack of action), what job/field would you encourage them to go into?”
Labour Day long weekend has ended up being a quieter one. Like many others, I’m bunkering down at home in an attempt to escape the worst of this early Autumn heatwave (even the Moomba Parade has been cancelled, here in Melbourne)! This is my belated attempt at a more thorough response, as a frustrated-yet-hopeful Careers Advisor and Vocational Coach…
Happy Labour Day 💪💚🌏
Embarking on the next adventure...
Here in Melbourne our Year 12 students have now completed a rather gruelling final two years of school, having spent a significant proportion of both 2020 and 2021 under various stages of lockdown. Not only has this meant ongoing pivots between on-campus and remote learning, it has interfered with important rites of passage such as 18th birthday parties and sitting for one’s driver’s license.
To say their emergence into legal adulthood has been challenging is an understatement: it has been damn hard, not just for them but for the parents and carers and friends who have endeavoured to support them the best ways they know how.
